The winery is located in the municipality of Bad Kreuznach in the German wine-growing region of Nahe. Documentary evidence of the family's winegrowing tradition dates back to 1627. In 1842, two brothers from the 10th generation emigrated to America, of which Eberhard Anheuser founded today's Anheuser-Busch brewery group in St. Louis (Missouri). His nephew Rudolf Anheuser is regarded as one of the most important winegrowing pioneers in the Nahe region. He expanded the business to its current size, planted vineyards in the pure set and introduced bottling. His descendant Paul Anheuser, after whom the winery is named today, pushed the development of dry wines. In 1969, Rudolf P. Anheuser took over the estate in the 13th generation, and since 2005 it has been run by the 14th generation, the two brothers Rudolf and Paul Anheuser.

The vineyards cover 45 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Berg and Höllenpfad (municipality of Roxheim), Dellchen and Kafels (municipality of Norheim), Halenberg (municipality of Monzingen), Felsensteyer and Pfingstweide (municipality of Niederhausen), Kehrenberg, Rotenberg and Schlossberg (municipality of Altenbamberg), Brückes, Forst, Hinkelstein, Kahlenberg, Kapellenpfad, Kauzenberg, Krötenpfuhl, Mönchberg, Narrenkappe, Osterhöll, St. Martin and Rosenberg (municipality of Kreuznach), as well as Felsberg, Heimberg, In den Felsen, Königsfels, Kupfergrube and Mühlberg (municipality of Schloßböckelheim).

The dominant grape variety is Riesling, and the white wine varieties Sylvaner,Pinot Gris,Pinot Blanc, Scheurebe and Müller-Thurgau are also cultivated, as well as the red wine varieties Pinot Noir and Dornfelder. Natural viticulture is consistently practised. Quality criteria are low pruning to ensure ripe, high-quality grapes, pressing at low pressure to preserve flavour, fermentation in small oak barrels, storage on fine lees and cold-sterile bottling. Wines up to 1969 are offered from the treasury. Fine brandies (wine, yeast), bottle-fermented sparkling wine and grape juice are also produced.
