Weingut Peter Jakob Kühn

The "Peter Jakob Kühn" winery is located in the municipality of Oestrich in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. It was founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn. Today, the estate is run by Peter Bernhard Kühn and his wife Viktoria, already the 12th generation of the family. The vineyards comprise 21 hectares of vines in the single vineyards Doosberg, Klosterberg and Lenchen (Oestrich), St. Nikolaus (Mittelheim), as well as Hendelberg and Jungfer (Hallgarten). They are 95% planted with Riesling, the rest mainly with Pinot Noir. Since 2004, the vineyards have been cultivated according to the rules of biodynamic viticulture; since 2009, they have been certified organic by the DEMETER association. This includes the supply of organic compost, a cover crop with various flower, grass and herb seeds as well as the use of medicinal herb extracts as sprays. Through 100% selective hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation and natural ageing, powerful, mineral wines are vinified. The white wines are predominantly dry. However, there are also noble sweet Prädikat wines.

The wines are marketed according to the VDP classification model. The quality pyramid is completed by the unique wines "Landgeflecht" and "Schlehdorn". For the fruit and noble sweet wines, Prädikats designations are given. Most of the wines undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The single-vineyard wines mature in large wooden barrels. The Pinot Noir red wines are matured in Burgundian barriques (228 l) for 12 months in the two versions "Spätburgunder" and "Spätburgunder Frühenberg" (old Gewann designation). The estate and local wines are marketed 12 months, the Erste Lagen 18 months, and the Grossen Gewächse two years after the harvest. All wines are sealed with natural corks. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates) as well as the group of biodynamic wineries La Renaissance des Appellations.
