The winery "Selbach-Oster" is located in the community Zeltingen in the German wine-growing region Moselle
(Mittelmosel). The family can look back on more than 400 years of winemaking tradition. The originating from Ürzig Selbachs operate since 1600 viticulture, the Osters were coopers from Zeltingen. The great-grandfather of the present owner Johannes possessed a steamboat with which barrels were transported across the Moselle and Rhine to the North Sea ports. The barrels were made by the cooper Matthias Oster (great-grandfather on his father's side). In 1963, the family-owned vineyards of the two families were removed from the traditional "winery J & H Selbach" old style and summarized as an independent company. Since then, there are two farms "J & H Selbach" (winery) and "Selbach-Oster" (winery).
The mostly south-facing, steep vineyards cover 21 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers sundial
, Schlossberg and Heaven
(Graach) and sundial
(Wehlen). The best individual parcels are Rotlay (Zeltinger sundial), Schmitt (Zeltinger Schlossberg) and Anrecht (Zeltinger Himmelreich). There are 97.5% Riesling and 2.5% Pinot Blanc grown. Many surfaces are with ungrafted
, z. T. planted over 100-year-old vines with aromatic, small berries.
Less steep three acres of vineyards are under the guidelines of the Organic viticulture
, the rest according to principles of Integrated pest management
(KIP). A high quality criterion is reduced yields. Selective manual harvesting in several aisles allows only mature and healthy grapes to be processed. The fermentation takes place predominantly spontaneous
with vineyard-owned wild yeasts. Half of the wines are matured in woodfibres without woody notes, the other in stainless steel tanks. Among the premium wines of the house are the single-layer wines. In weather-appropriate years is also a Eiswein
From the winery "J & H Selbach" carefully selected cider and young wine of individual layers of small producers is bought, with which often already exist for several generations business relationships. Together with selected high-quality wines from the region, a marketing takes place in Europe and overseas. Both companies are managed by Johannes Selbach and his wife Barbara.
