The winery is located in the municipality of
Johannisberg (part of
Geisenheim) in the German
wine-growing region of
Rheingau. The traditional family has been growing grapes here since 1670. Today, Michael Trenz is the 11th generation to run the winery. A wine tavern with Rheingau cuisine and a Mediterranean courtyard is attached. The vineyards cover 17 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyards
Hölle and Vogelsang (Johannisberg), Dachsberg, Gutenberg and
Hasensprung (Winkel), Magdalenenkreuz (Rüdesheim), and
Kläuserweg (Geisenheim). They are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling (85%) and Pinot Blanc (12%) and the red wine variety Pinot Noir (3%). The late and selectively harvested grapes are vinified into fresh, fruity, effervescent wines after gentle pressing and slow, controlled cold fermentation. The Pinot Noir is matured 100% in large wooden barrels with long storage. A
vine lease for a Riesling or Spätburgunder vine is also offered. Around 180,000 bottles of wine are produced annually.
Since 2002, the Trenz winery has been cultivating two hectares of vines in
Stellenbosch, South Africa. Here, Michael Trenz vinifies a strong, spicy red wine cuveé from Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, which is matured in barriques, as well as a purely varietal Sauvignon Blanc with a
reductive finish. The two wines are called "Trenz 2two"
