In Austria, viticulture has been practised since the time of the Celtic settlement almost 3,000 years ago. The Burgenland community of Zagersdorf and the Lower Austrian community of Stillfried in the Weinviertel are considered the oldest winegrowing communities in Austria. In both places grape seeds were found which date from 700 and 900 BC respectively and can be clearly assigned to the species Vitis vinifera. The white grape variety comes from Hungary. The name means "lime leaf" and is derived from the remotely similar leaf shape as well as from the aroma of the large, loose berry-like grapes.
