The winery is located in the municipality of Castelbello-Tschars in the lower Vinschgau Valley below Juval Castle at the corner to Val Senales Valley in the Italian wine-growing region of
South Tyrol (
Trentino-South Tyrol). The total estate covers seven hectares, on which vines and fruit are cultivated for the farm distillery. The owner is the well-known mountaineer Reinhold Messner. Since 1992 the farm has been leased by Gisela & Martin Aurich, who built it up as a joint project with Reinhold Messner. The vineyards cover four hectares in a south-southeast facing, predominantly steep location at an altitude of 630 to 850 metres above sea level with primary rock weathered soil on gneiss rocks. With a vine density of 8,000 vines per hectare, the varieties Blauburgunder, Weißburgunder, Riesling (25% each), Müller-Thurgau (15%) and Gemischter Sätze (10%) are cultivated there
During the grape harvest, up to three selection courses are practiced with the aim of producing highly ripe grapes. During the vinification of the wines, great importance is attached to the site characteristics with fine aromas and mineral acidity. Among the premium wines are the "Castel Juval Pinot Blanc" with stainless steel and wooden barrel maturation on the
fine yeast, the "Castel Juval Riesling" in the "site selection" and the sweet "Spielerei" versions, which is matured in stainless steel on the
fine yeast, and the "Castel Juval Pinot Noir", which is matured for 12 months in wooden barrels (80% barrique, 20% large wooden barrel). An average of 30,000 to 35,000 bottles are produced annually, about 10% are exported to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the in-house distillery, single-variety grappa (marc brandies) and various fruit brandies are distilled. The winery is a member of the two associations
Freie Weinbauern Südtirol and Südtiroler Hofbrennerei.
