The appellation named after the town of the same name is located in the Côte de Beaune part of the Burgundian Cote d'Or in the neighborhood of the communities Meursault and Monthélie, The 135 hectares of vineyards also include areas of the parishes Petit Auxey and Melin. Two thirds are red wines (made from Pinot Noir with Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault) and one third white wines (from Chardonnay with Pinot Blanc). There are nine Premiers Crus with 32 hectares of vineyards, the most important are Bréterins, Climat de Val, Duresses, Écusseaux and Reugne. An alternative appellation exclusively for red wines is Auxey-Duresses-Côte de Beaune .
