Béarn AOC
Béarn AOC |
Description to Béarn AOC
Named after the former county in the Middle Ages (largely today's Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques), this small appellation is located in the southwest corner of southwestern France. Wines may be produced in three separate areas. The first two coincide with the Jurançon and Madiran appellations. The third area covers over 200 hectares of vines in 13 communes around Orthez and Salies-de-Béarn on the edge of the Pyrenees in the Basque Country. This one is allowed to use the AOC Béarn-Bellocq. Red wine and rosé are blended from Tannat (maximum 60%), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc (Bouchy, Couahort, Trouchet), Fer, Manseng Noir and Courbu Noir. The white wines produced in small quantities consist of Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Courbu Blanc, Lauzet, Camaralet, Raffiat de Moncade and Sauvignon Blanc. Well-known producers are CV de Bellocq, Domaine Bouscassé, Domaine de Guilhémas, Clos Guirouilh and Domaine Larribere.
