Description to Beiras

Wine-growing region in the north of Portugal with the three landscapes of Beira Alta, Beira Baxa and Beira Litoral. The area, also classified as IGP (Land wines), stretches from the border of Spain in the east to the Atlantic coast in the west. Viticulture has an ancient tradition here, cultivated as early as the early Middle Ages by the Benedictine and Cistercian orders in the numerous monasteries. Within the region are the DOC areas Bairrada, Beira Interior, Dão, Encostas d'Aire, Lafões and Távora-Varosa (centre of Portuguese sparkling wine production) as well as the IGP areas Beira Atlântico, Terras da Beira, Terras de Císter and Terras do Dão. Mainly autochthonous varieties are cultivated. White wines, which serve as base wines for the production of sparkling wine, make up a large part. Taoruca is home to the oldest and largest Portuguese sparkling wine producer, Caves Murganheira. Other producers are Entre Serras, Kemper Julia and Quinta da Foz do Arouce.
