Description to Colli Tortonesi DOC

DOC area for a wide range of red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region of Piedmont. The zone comprises around 1,500 hectares of vineyards in the Tortona hill area in just under 50 municipalities on the lower Apennine foothills southeast of the eponymous municipality of Tortona in the province of Alessandria. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, the bottle label may state Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard. There are two subzones, Monleale and Terre di Libarna, whose names may be indicated on the bottle label after Colli Tortonesi for certain types of wine.

The Monleale subzone includes the municipalities of Avolasca, Berzano di Tortona, Brignano-Frascata, Carbonara Scrivia, Carezzano, Casalnoceto, Casasco, Cassano Spinola, Castellania, Castellar Guidobono, Cerreto Grue, Costa Vescovato, Gavazzana, Momperone, Monleale, Montegioco, Montemarzino, Paderna, Pozzol Groppo, Sant'Agata Fossili, Sardigliano, Sarezzano, Spineto Scrivia, Stazzano, Tortona, Viguzzolo, Villalvernia, Villaromagnano, Volpedo and Volpeglino The subzone Terre di Libarna includes the municipalities of Albera Ligure, Arquata Scrivia, Borghetto di Borbera, Cabella Ligure, Cantalupo Ligure, Carrega Ligure, Dernice, Grondona, Mongiardino Ligure, Roccaforte Ligure, Rocchetta Ligure, Stazzano and Vignole Borbera.

The Bianco is blended in any use from Cortese, Favorita, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Bianco(Pinot Blanc), Pinot Grigio(Pinot Gris), Riesling Italico(Welschriesling), Barbera Bianca, Chardonnay, Sauvignon(Sauvignon Blanc), Sylvaner Verde(Silvaner) and Timorasso. Rosso and Chiaretto or Rosato are produced in any use of Aleatico, Barbera, Bonarda Piemontese, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino, Pinot Nero(Pinot Noir), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Croatina, Lambrusca di Alessandria, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese.

The pure variety wines must contain differently at least 85% or 95% of the respective variety, the remaining 15% can be other approved varieties. These are the four white wines Cortese, Favorita, Moscato(Muscat Blanc) and Timorasso, and the four red wines Barbera, Croatina, Dolcetto and Freisa. In the subzone Monleale there is a Barbera, in the subzone Terre di Libarna the wine types Bianco (zum. 60% Timorasso), Rosso (zum. 60% Barbera), Timorasso (zum. 95%) and a Spumante (zum. 60% Timorasso).

There is a Superiore from Barbera, a Novello from Rosso and Dolcetto, a Frizzante from Bianco, Cortese, Chiaretto and Rosso, a Riserva from Cortese, Timorasso, Barbera, Croatina and Terre di Libarna Timorasso.
