The appellation, named after the municipality of Roanne, is located on the upper course of the Loire north of the appellation Cotes du Forez as well as east of the two appellations Saint-Pourçain and Cotes d'Auvergne, The wine transported to Paris via direct canal and river connections gained great popularity in the 19th century. The vineyards cover 220 hectares of vines in 14 municipalities on the left bank of the Loire. The red and rosé wines are made from Gamay by type. The red wine is similar to that Beaujolais, The region's dry white wines are marketed as Vin de Pays d'Urfé. Well-known producers are Domaine du Fontenay, Domaine du Pavillon and Domaine Serol.
