The appellation, named after the municipality of Roanne, is located on the upper course of the Loire north of the appellation Cotes du Forez as well as east of the two appellations Saint-Pourçain and Cotes d'Auvergne, The wine transported to Paris via direct canal and river connections gained great popularity in the 19th century.
