Appellation on the upper run of the Loire in the north of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, The name is derived from the city of Gien. The former VDQS Côtes de Gien was only classified in 1998. It covers about 180 hectares of vineyards on calcareous and flinty soil. Of the 16 municipalities, eight in the département of Nièvre have the right to the appellation name Coteaux du Giennois Cosne-Sur-Loire . About 70% fruity and rather tannin red wines and rosé wines from Gamay and Pinot Noir (maximum 80%) are blended. The white wines are produced from Sauvignon Blanc. Well-known producers are Joseph Balland-Chapuis, René Berthier and Paul Paulat.
