The Spanish DO area with approximately 7,600 hectares of vineyards is named after the same place, the name comes from the Moorish "Al-Amankha" (dry place). The area is part of the big region La Mancha, The vineyards are located at 700 meters above sea level. About half of the vineyard is covered with the red Monastrell, others are Cencibel (Tempranillo) and in small amounts Cabernet Sauvignon. The red wines make up 85% of the production, the white wines are made from Merseguera and Airén. Well-known producers are Coop. del Campo Santa Cruz and Bodegas Piqueras.
