Description to D.O. Cigales

The DO, named after the city of the same name, is located in the Spanish region Castile and Leon west of the DO Ribera del Duero, It comprises around 2,900 hectares of vineyards in 12 municipalities, mostly on slopes and terraces. The continental climate is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. It was here in the Middle Ages clairet produced and today's good reputation is also based on rosé wines (rosados), which make up two thirds of the production. These are made from the red varieties Tinto del País (Tempranillo, at least 60%) and Garnacha Tinta as well as the white varieties Verdejo, Viura, Palomino and Albillo and briefly aged in the barrel. On the back label they are called Cigales Nuevo. The red wines are blended from Tinto del País (at least 85%) and Garnacha Tinta and sometimes also with Cabernet Sauvignon.
