Description to D.O. Empordà

This DO area (Catalan Empordà) is in the far corner of northeast Spain on the Mediterranean coast in the region Catalonia and borders on the French Roussillon, The area is considered one of the cradles of Spanish viticulture. The vineyards cover 2,300 hectares of vines on limestone soil and are located at an altitude of 200 meters, often in crater-shaped valleys (see below Conca ). The climate is Mediterranean with cold north winds. The white wines are made from the varieties Chenin Blanc. Macabeo. Muscat Blanc. Parellada. Riesling. Xarello and also Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer vinified. Red varieties are Cariñena ( mazuelo ) Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah and Tempranillo, For the most part rosados (from the Cariñena variety) and traditionally also alcoholic Rancios produced. In smaller quantities too Cava (Sparkling wine). A specialty since the Middle Ages has been "Garnatxa", a pure, sweet red wine made from Garnacha Tinta with 15.5% alcohol content, This is similar to the French Banyuls across the border in the Roussillon area.
