The DO area in the north of Spain Castile and Leon stretches along the Duero River (which subsequently crosses the Portuguese border and is called Douro there) over a length of over a hundred kilometers. The area is characterized by its different sizes soil types, which also results in a variety of wine styles and qualities. The vineyards cover 18,600 hectares of vineyards, mostly in the highlands between 750 and 850 meters above sea level. The climate is characterized by very hot temperatures of up to 40 ° C during the day and a drop of up to 15 ° C at night. These strong fluctuations in temperature or the nocturnal rest phase have a very positive effect on the nutrient uptake and acidity of the grapes.
