The DO area (Spanish highland), named after its high location, lies in the northeast Spain in the southeast of the region Catalonia in the province of Tarragona and borders on the DO area to the west Tarragona on. Viticulture was practiced here in the early Middle Ages, which is documented by documents with wine-legal concerns from the years 1296 and 1319. The Mediterranean-continental climate is characterized by long and hot summers with sufficient rainfall and plenty of sunshine, as well as very cold winters for the higher areas, especially in the east. The vineyards are exposed to a north wind and the moist, warm south wind known as "Garbi".
