Description to D.O. Valencia

The name Valencia applies to the autonomous, Spanish Region in the Levant, one of the three provinces of this region (besides Alicante and Castellón de la Plana), for the capital (third largest city of Spain) of the province of Valencia as well as for a DO area in the central east of the Iberian peninsula. The port city of Valencia was already in Roman times an important transhipment point for wine. The Roman poet Juvenal (1st century) calls in his satires a wine from Sagunto. Likewise, the scholar mentions Arnaldus de Villanova (1240-1311) Wines from Valencia.

The huge DO area covers 19,500 hectares of vineyards on mainly calcareous soils in almost 70 municipalities. It is subdivided into the subzones Alto Turia with the highest areas at around 800 meters, Clariano , Moscatel de Valencia and Valentino (the largest). The Mediterranean to continental climate is characterized by heavy storms and cloudbursts in summer and autumn. Partially becomes artificial irrigation used.

Important white wines are Merseguera, Moscatel Romano ( Muscat d'Alexandrie ) Macabeo, Malvasia ( Planta Nova ), Planta Fina ( Damaschino ) Pedro Ximénez. Tortosina. Verdil. Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc. Sémillon and Moscatel de Hungría ( Muscat Blanc?). Important red wines are Monastrell. Bobal. Tempranillo. Garnacha Tinta, Garnacha Tintorera ( Alicante Henri Bouschet ) Forcallat Tinta. Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot. Pinot Noir and Syrah, The wines may with those of the west lying DO area Requena (and vice versa) are blended.
