The DO area named after the city of the same name in the southeast Spain in the Murcia region comprises only one municipality. He is one of the Levant, The vineyards cover 20,000 hectares, but only 4,600 of them are approved for quality wine. The clay soils over limestone with good water permeability are 400 to 700 meters above sea level. There is a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, as well as with extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night. Red wine varieties are grown to over 90%. The dominant with 85% of the vineyard is the Monastrell, followed by Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cencibel (Tempranillo), Merlot, Tintorera (Alicante Henri Bouschet) and Syrah. The main white varieties are Merseguera, Airén, Macabeo, Malvasía (Síria) and Chardonnay. A peculiarity is that this area of the phylloxera was largely spared, a large part of the vineyards is still planted with autochthonous, root-right vines. Well-known producers are Bodegas Castaño, Bodegas La Purísima, Señorio de Barahonda and Antonio Candela e Hijos.
