DOC area for red wines in the Italian region Piedmont, which was classified in 1972. It covers 1,500 hectares of vineyards on both sides of the Orba Valley in the province of Alessandria with the municipalities Belforte Monferrato, Bosio, Capriata d'Orba, Carpeneto, Casaleggio Boiro, Cassinelle, Castelletto d'Orba, Cremolino, Lerma, Molare, Montaldeo, Montaldo Bormida, Morsasco, Mornese, Ovada, Parodi Ligure, Prasco, Roccagrimalda, San Cristoforo, Silvano d'Orba, Tagliolo Monferrato and Trisobbio.

The wine is sorted from the variety Dolcetto (also Uva di Ovada) pressed. Up to a maximum of 3% other approved, non-aromatic varieties may be used.
