The appellation is located in the winegrowing region Loire near the mouth of the river in the Atlantic. The former VDQS division was classified as AOP in 2011. The vineyards cover about 480 hectares of vineyards in 19 municipalities of the Vendée. There are four subregions Brem, Mareuil, Pissotte and Vix, whose names may also cite privileged communities. The name "Anciens Fiefs du Cardinal" (cardinal's former fiefdoms) refers to Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642), who appreciated the wines from this area. It is mainly red and rosé wines from Gamay and Pinot Noir (to 50%), as well as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Négrette and max. 15% Gamay de Chaudenay produced. The white wines are blended from Chenin Blanc (50%), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Melon de Bourgogne and Groslot Gris. Well-known producers are Domaine de Barbinière, Domaine de la Cambaudiere, Clos des Chaumes, Domaine Coirier, Ferme des Ardillers and Michon.
