The appellation is in the range Pays Nantais in the winegrowing region Loire near the mouth of the river in the Atlantic. The previous one VDQS Area was classified as an AOP in 2011. The vineyards cover around 480 hectares of vines in 19 municipalities in the Vendée department. There are the five sub-areas of Brem, Chantonnay, Mareuil, Pissotte and Vix, whose names may additionally mention privileged communities. The name "Anciens Fiefs du Cardinal" (former fiefdoms of the cardinal) refers to cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642) who valued the wines from this area.
