Description to Fitou AOC

Appellation in the very south of the French wine region Languedoc in the department Aude, As an enclave, it lies within the area Corbières on the border to the wine-growing region Roussillon, Fitou was classified as the first AOC in this region in 1948 and belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". AOC wines are also allowed in the Fitou area Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes to be produced.

Vineyards in Fitou

The vineyards cover around 2,300 hectares of vines on the Mediterranean coast at up to 450 meters above sea level. The different floors with over 20 types consist of alluvium (alluvial soils), dolomite, limestone, plaster and marl. The area is geographically divided and consists of the two zones Fitou Maritime with the five municipalities of Caves, Fitou, La Palme, Leucate and Treilles and Fitou de Hautes-Corbières with the four municipalities Cascastel, Durban, Tuchan and Villeneuve- ten kilometers apart. les-Corbières.

The red wine is made from at least 70% of the main varieties Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) and Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ), and possibly Mourvèdre ( Monastrell ) and Syrah blended ( Cinsault is no longer permitted and Lladon Pelut may no longer be replanted). Well-known producers are Domaine Bertrand-Bergé, Château de Nouvelles, Domaine Lérys, Domaine Rolland, Mas des Caprices and CV Val d'Orbieu.
