The appellation is located around the eponymous township Montpellier in the northeast of the French winegrowing region Languedoc, North closes the AOC Pic Saint-Loup at. It was classified as AOC in 2003 and belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". The vineyards cover 1,000 hectares of vineyards on diverse soils of sandstone, limestone, pebble and marl. They cover 46 municipalities in the Département Hérault, The red wine is made from at least 2 of the 3 main varieties Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ), Mourvèdre ( Monastrell ) and Syrah, as well as Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) blended.
