The appellation is located in the winegrowing region Loire in a semicircle around the city of Nantes on the Atlantic coast as enclave in the large area Pays Nantais, The former VDQS division was classified as AOP in 2012. The name derives from the main grape variety Gros Plant, a synonym used here for the variety Fool Blanche, The vine was cultivated here already in the 16th century and the wine made from it was especially popular with the Dutch and became part of the distillation used.

The vineyards cover a total of 2,300 hectares of vineyards in more than 90 municipalities of the three départements of Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire and Vendée. The white wines are sorted from Folle Blanche (Gros Plant).
