Largest wine region in Hungary in the Pannonian Plain (Alföld) in the south of the country with around half of the Hungarian vineyards. Until 1997 it was called Kiskunság. The vineyards cover 28,000 hectares on mainly sandy soils. After the catastrophic Phylloxera disaster Vines were planted here in the 19th century because of the pest sand does not tolerate.
