Luberon AOC |
Description to Luberon AOC
Appellation for white, rosé and red wines in the département of Vaucluse in the southern section of the Rhône wine-growing region. It is named after the limestone rock mountain range southeast of Avignon in southern France. Until the 2008 vintage, the designation was Côtes du Luberon (the reason for the renaming is to provide clearer identification for consumers). The recognition in 1988 is mainly thanks to millionaire Jean-Louis Chancel, who set high quality standards with the wines of his Château Val-Joanis estate. The vineyards cover 2,700 hectares of vines on the left bank of the Rhône in 36 communes between Cavaillon in the west and Manosque in the east. They are hillside vineyards with limestone soils.
Two-thirds of the wines produced are rosé and two-thirds red. These are blended from a minimum of 60% Grenache Noir (Garnacha Tinta), Mourvèdre (Monastrell) and Syrah (Syrah to a maximum of 20%), as well as a maximum of 20% Cinsaut and Carignan (Mazuelo). Marselan or white varieties are also permitted up to a maximum of 10%, and Viognier for rosé. The white wine is blended in any mixture of the main varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc (Garnacha Blanca), Marsanne, Roussanne and Vermentino. In addition, a maximum of 50% Ugni Blanc (Trebbiano Toscano) and a maximum of 10% Viognier are permitted. Well-known producers include Cave de Bonnieux, Château de la Canorgue, Domaine de la Citadelle, Château de l'Isolette, Château Val-Joanis and La Vieille Ferme.
