The wine region is in the northeast Hungary near the border with Slovakia west of the area Eger, The vineyards on volcanic soil around the city of Gyöngyös cover over 7,000 hectares of vineyards. White wines are mainly produced. The main types of white wine are Chardonnay. Leányka, Olaszrizling ( ), Ottonel Muskotály ( Muscat Ottonel ), Rizlingszilváni ( Müller-Thurgau ) Sauvignon Blanc and Szürkebarát ( Pinot gris ), the most important Kékfrankos red wines ( ) and Zweigelt, Large cooperatives dominate the market, for example Danubia and Nagyréde. Other well-known producers are Bárdos és Fia, Borpalota, Németh Attila and Szőke Mátyás.
