Mittelrhein

Description to Mittelrhein

The growing area is largely in the country Rheinland-Pfalz in Germany, a small area in North Rhine-Westphalia. The vineyards cover 470 hectares of vineyards, which extend from the municipality of Oberdollendorf near Königswinter across from Bonn to north of Bingen partly on both banks of the eponymous middle course of the Rhine extend. In the heart of the beautiful river landscape is the city of Koblenz. The Romans founded viticulture here after the founding of the cities of Cologne (Colonia) and Bonn (Bonna). There was a heyday in the Middle Ages under the leadership of Cistercian, who built the Heisterbach Abbey above Oberdollendorf, which is now only in ruins. The city of Bacharach is an ancient wine trade center.

Map of the Middle Rhine region

The famous "Wirtshaus an der Lahn" is located in Niederlahnstein. The world-famous 132-meter-high Loreley rock is located near the town of St. Goarshausen. The legend from the 19th century reports that a mermaid attracted the Rhine boatmen with her lovely song and had their boats shattered on the slate rock. The poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) made the Loreley world famous with the lines "I don't know what should it mean that I'm so sad". She is also the patron saint and symbol of the growing region. Annually on the first weekend of September takes place at Burg Rheinfels, municipality St. Goar the "Middle Rhine Wine Forum" on Loreley Rock and the "Middle Rhine Wine Fair" in Bacharach-Steeg on the first Saturday in May.

Climate and soil

The vineyards stretch over 120 kilometers on both sides of the Rhine deep into the side valleys. There are also some of them on the banks of the Lahn. The overwhelmingly beautiful landscape with many castle ruins presents itself as a narrow band of vineyards, some of which are terraced on the steep slopes of the river. UNESCO also took this into account by separating the Middle Rhine Valley in 2002 Bingen-Büdesheim and Koblenz for World Heritage explained. The sheltered locations benefit from many sunny days; the Rhine acts as an excellent heat store. The floors consist of weathered slate and greywacke, isolated loess islands and in the north of volcanic rock. More than 80% of the vineyards are steep slopes with at least 30% Tilt, the rest almost only slopes, Some such as in Boppard Hamm count among the steepest vineyards Germany. The elaborate processing means that the surfaces shrink continuously. In the past 30 years this was around 40%.
