Moulis-en-Medoc AOC

Moulis-en-Medoc AOC

Description to Moulis-en-Medoc AOC

One of the six municipalities (next to Listrac-Médoc. Margaux. Pauillac. Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien ) within the French area Médoc (Haut-Médoc), which are appellations of their own and may bear the common name on the bottle label. The name derives from the numerous wind and water mills that were formerly operated here. The municipality, also known as Moulis-en-Médoc, is the smallest of all six with around 600 hectares of vineyards. The area forms a twelve-kilometer-long and up to two-kilometer wide strip running from southwest to northeast between Margaux and Saint-Julien. The predominant soil consists of deposited gravel on a sandy layer of clay. The area is a little further back from the Gironde and is therefore at risk of frost due to the weaker temperature compensation by the river.

Château Chasse-Spleen

There is none of the 61 here Châteaux that at the famous Bordeaux Classification were added to the Grand Cru list in 1855. For whatever reason, the municipality was not included in the classification at that time, because there were and still are excellent wines. Around 30 wineries are classified as Cru Bourgeois and a dozen as Cru Artisan. The typical red wines Bordeaux blend ( Rive gauche ) out Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc and Merlot are less tannic and develop a little faster. Well-known wineries are Château Chasse-Spleen. Château Dutruch-Grand-Poujeaux. Château Gressier Grand-Poujeaux. Château Maucaillou. Château Moulin-a-Vent and Château Poujeaux,
