Muscat de Lunel AOC

Description to Muscat de Lunel AOC

The appellation is located in the very east of the French wine-growing region Languedoc near the Mediterranean coast. To the southwest are the two AOCs Muscat de Mireval and Muscat de Frontignan (both with similar wine). The white sweet wine was classified as an AOC in 1943. It belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". Already at the beginning of the 17th century, the wine had an excellent reputation and was served in Versailles at the court of the Sun King Louis XIV (1638-1715). The vineyards cover 340 hectares of vines on clay soils that are rich in iron oxide and thus red in colour. They cover the four communes of Lunel, Lunel-Viel (with the Clos du Mazet, Clos Bousquet, Clos du Capitaine Coste and Clos Reynaud sites considered the best), Vérargues and Saturargues in the Hérault department. It is one of the four vin doux naturel in the Languedoc. It is made from 100% pure Muscat Blanc. Around 80 winegrowers are members of the winegrowers' cooperative Les Vignerons du Muscat de Lunel.
