Palette AOC |
Description to Palette AOC
The small appellation is located in the centre of the French wine region Provence, south-east of the city of Aix-en-Provence. To the north is the large appellation Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence; Palette is often called the Grand Cru of the area because of the quality of its wines. The vineyards cover 40 hectares of vines in the two communes of Meyreuil and Le Tholonet and some plots of land in Aix-en-Provence. The special limestone soil with the name "Calcaire de Langesse" was the main reason for establishing the appellation in 1948. The vineyards are shared between the Château Crémade, Château de Meyreuil, Château Henri Bonnaud, Château Simone, Domaine du Grand Côté and Domaine Dupéré Barrera.
There is a confusing variety of varieties with about 30 partly very rare grape varieties. Red wine and rosé are blended from at least 50% of the main varieties Mourvèdre(Monastrell), Grenache Noir(Garnacha Tinta) and Plant d'Arles(Cinsaut), as well as Brun Fourca, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan Noir, Castets, Durif, Muscat d'Hamburg, Syrah, Teoulier Noir and Tibouren, as well as a maximum of 15% white grape varieties. The white wine is made from at least 55% of the main variety Clairette, as well as Aragnan Blanc(Picardan), Colombard, Grenache Blanc(Garnacha Blanca), Muscat Blanc, Pascal Blanc, Piquepoul Blanc, Terret Gris and Ugni Blanc(Trebbiano Toscano).
