Quarts-de-Chaume AOC

Description to Quarts-de-Chaume AOC

The appellation is an enclave within the Coteaux du Layon area in the Loire wine region. The name is derived from the "best quarter" (Quart) around Chaume in the municipality of Rochefort-sur-Loire. In ancient times, the feudal lord kept the yields of this quarter. The vineyards cover more than 50 hectares of vineyards on steep slopes facing south on the right bank of the Layon, a tributary of the Loire. This long-lasting sweet wine is made from 100% pure variety of noble rot (not necessarily) or at least overripe grapes of the Chenin Blanc variety (here Pineau de la Loire). The yield is limited to a maximum of 25 hl/ha, the alcohol content must be at least 12% vol, the residual sugar content at least 34 g/l.

In the commune of Rochefort-sur-Loire there was an area called Coteaux du Layon Chaume from 2003. Quarts de Chaume producers argued that this was a disqualification of their higher rated AOC. On the part of the INAO, a special regulation was then adopted in 2011. Quarts de Chaume can be supplemented with "Grand Cru" and for Chaume there is the designation Coteaux-du-Layon Premier Cru Chaume.

Well-known producers in the area are Château de Bellerive, Château Pierre-Bise, Domaine des Baumard, Domaine des Forges, Domaine de La Poterie and Domaine de la Roche Moreau. A second enclave within the Coteaux du Layon area with very similar wines is the AOC Bonnezeaux.
