Description to Ribatejo

DOC / DOP area in the center of Portugal northeast of Lisbon. It lies in the Tejo plain between the Estremadura in the west and Alentejo in the East. On the fertile alluvial soils near the river is mainly grown vegetables, fruits and rice. The area is therefore also nicknamed "Garden of Lisbon". The largely flat vineyards of the area cover a total of 25,000 hectares, but only about one tenth of these are classified as DOC area. This is in the six sub-areas Almeirim, Cartaxo (part of it also in Estremadura), Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar geliedert. The entire region is under the name Tejo (formerly Ribatejana) classified as IGP (Landwine). The best quality areas for viticulture are located further away from the river bed in the hinterland on barren, sandy soils with granite and slate underground. The climate is characterized by hot and dry summers. In winter, part of an artificial irrigation respectively.

From the 2000 DOC classification, there was a qualitative upturn. Well-known producers of the area are Bright Brothers (Fiuza & Bright), Falua, Quinta da Alorna, Quinta da Lagoalva, Quinta do Casal Branco and Terra de Lobos.
