The appellation in the French region Roussillon is named after the small town of Rivesaltes north of Perpignan. It is geographically identical to the appellation Muscat de Rivesaltes and differs as regards the authorized grape varieties. The vineyards cover about 14,000 hectares of vineyards, making it the largest area for sweet, gespriteten Vin doux naturel, Of the approximately a dozen different VDN's in France (eight of them in the Languedoc-Roussillon area), 50% of the production goes to the Rivesaltes. Compared to Muscat de Rivesaltes is a variety of grape varieties allowed.
