The appellation in the French region Roussillon is named after the small town of Rivesaltes north of Perpignan. It is geographically identical to the appellation Muscat de Rivesaltes and differs in the approved grape varieties. The vineyards cover around 14,000 hectares of vines, making this the largest area for sweet, fortified Vin doux naturel, Of the dozen or so different VDNs in France (including eight in the Languedoc-Roussillon area), 50% of the production is on the Rivesaltes. A large number of grape varieties are permitted in relation to Muscat de Rivesaltes. The wine may be blended from Muscat Blanc, Muscat d'Alexandrie, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabéo and Tourbat (Malvoisie du Roussillon), as well as a maximum of 10% Carignan, Cinsaut, Palomino and Syrah.
