The red wine from this area is considered the successor of the universal scholar Pliny the Elder (23-79) ancient wine Hadrianum.
The Rosso Piceno (also called Novello ) is made from the varieties Montepulciano (35-85%), Sangiovese (15-50%) and other approved varieties (max 15%). The Rosso Piceno Superiore needs a higher alcohol content with at least 11.5% vol and have a maturation period of at least 12 months. The pure-bred Rosso Piceno Sangiovese must contain at least 85% Sangiovese.
