Roussillon 28 growing regions

Description to Roussillon

The wine-growing region lies deep in the south France and is the southern part of the huge area Languedoc-Roussillon (see the story there). Here, the first Muscat grapes were cultivated, which were used as the basis for the famous, fortified sweet wines. As the inventor of today so called Vin doux naturel applies the famous doctor and scholars Arnaldus de Villanova (1240-1311). Although they are also adjacent to the northeast Languedoc but Roussillon represents about 90%. For four centuries it was part of the Kingdom of Mallorca and only came to France in 1659. The viticulture is therefore among other things regarding Rebsorten also strongly influenced by Spanish influence.

The region is bordered by the three mountain ranges Corbières in the north, Canigou in the west and Albères on the border Spain enclosed in the south. The vineyards are up to 600 meters high on the Mediterranean facing slopes and cover 22,600 hectares of vineyards in the department Pyrenees-Orientales, The wines are characterized by the even Mediterranean climate. Roussillon is mainly a red wine and rosé wine region. The red wines are from Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) with about half of the vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ) and Merlot, the white wines from the varieties Muscat Blanc. Bourboulenc. Clairette, Grenache Blanc ( Garnacha Blanca ) Marsanne, Piquepoul ( Fool Blanche ) and Roussanne vinified.
