The winegrowing region lies deep in the south France and is the southern part of the huge area Languedoc-Roussillon (see the story there). The first Muscatel grapes were cultivated here, which were used as the basis for the famous, fortified sweet wines. As the inventor of what is called today Vin doux naturel applies the famous doctor and scholar Arnaldus de Villanova (1240-1311). They are also in the north-east adjacent Languedoc generated, but Roussillon represents around 90%. It was part of the Kingdom of Mallorca for four centuries and only came to France in 1659. The viticulture is therefore also relatively strongly influenced by Spanish influence, among other things, with regard to grape varieties.
The region is bordered by the three mountain ranges Corbières in the north, Canigou in the west and Albères Spain enclosed in the south. The vineyards are up to 600 meters high on the slopes facing the Mediterranean Sea and cover 22,600 hectares of vineyards in the department Pyrenees-Orientales, The wines are characterized by the even Mediterranean climate. Roussillon is mainly a red wine and rosé wine area. The red wines are made from Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) with around half of the vineyard area, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ) and Merlot, the white wines from the varieties Muscat Blanc. Bourboulenc. Clairette, Grenache Blanc ( Garnacha Blanca ) Marsanne, Piquepoul ( Folle Blanche ) and Roussanne vinified.
Banyuls, Banyuls Grand Cru, Banyuls Grand Cru Rancio, Banyuls Rancio
