The wine-growing region lies deep in the south France and is the southern part of the huge area Languedoc-Roussillon (see the story there). Here, the first Muscat grapes were cultivated, which were used as the basis for the famous, fortified sweet wines. As the inventor of today so called Vin doux naturel applies the famous doctor and scholars Arnaldus de Villanova (1240-1311). Although they are also adjacent to the northeast Languedoc but Roussillon represents about 90%. For four centuries it was part of the Kingdom of Mallorca and only came to France in 1659.
