Area classified as Cru (peak appellation) in the northern section of the Rhone on the right bank. It stretches for 50 kilometers from Condrieu in the north to Saint-Péray in the south. The vineyards cover around 900 hectares of vineyards in 26 municipalities in the two departments Ardèche and Loire. The center of Saint-Joseph is the city of Tournon, on the banks of the Rhone opposite the Hermitage mountain. Wine was valued by the French kings as early as the 16th century. He was one of them favorite wines by the French writer Victor Hugo (1802-1885), the creator of the novel "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame".
The red wine is out Syrah with a maximum of 10% of the two white varieties Marsanne and Roussanne and the white wine made from the Roussanne and Marsanne varieties. The wines resemble those of the appellation Hermitage, Well-known producers are Chapoutier, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Pierre Coursodon, Yves Cuilleron, Delas Frères, Philippe Faury, Pierre Gaillard, Bernard Gripa, Jean-Louis Grippat, Jaboulet-Aîné and Tardieu-Laurent.
