The winegrowing area in the extreme northwest Hungary on the border to Austria is named after the city of the same name (German: Ödenburg). It is one of the oldest in Hungary, because already the Celts operated here viticulture. The climate with a rather cool and rainy summer and a sunny autumn is positively influenced by the nearby Lake Neusiedl. The vineyards on clay, loess, limestone and slate cover about 1,900 hectares of vineyards. The climate favors the production of red wines with the most important Kékfrankos ( Blaufränkisch ), as well as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Kékburgundi (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt. The white wines are made from Chardonnay, Leányka, Sauvignon Blanc and Zöld Veltelini (Grüner Veltliner). There are some joint ventures with Austrian winemakers, for example Pfneisl and Weninger Franz, Other well-known Hungarian producers are Luka Enikő, Ráspi and Szigeti.
