Description to Torgiano DOC

DOC area for red wines, rosé wines and white wines in the Italian region Umbria, The name derives from "Torre di Giano" (Tower of Janus - Janus is the two-faced ancient Roman deity). The cornerstone for the DOC classification was laid in the 1970s by the wine legend Giorgio Lungarotti (+1999). The zone comprises parts of the eponymous municipality of Torgiano in the province of Perugia. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, you can use the bottle label Vigna followed by the location name.

The Bianco is out Trebbiano Toscano (50-70%), as well as other approved varieties (max. 30%) pressed. The Rosso and Rosato wine types are discontinued Sangiovese (50%). The Spumante is made from Pinot Nero Pinot Noir (max. 50%), Chardonnay (max. 50%), as well as other approved varieties (max. 15%) blended. The Vendemmia tardiva ( late vintage ) is made from Chardonnay (50%). The Vin Santo is produced from Trebbiano Toscano (50-70%). The varietal wines must contain at least 85% of the respective variety, the remaining 15% can be other approved varieties. These are the three white wines Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio ( Pinot gris ) and Riesling Italico ( ), as well as the three red wines Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot and Pinot Nero ( Pinot Noir, The Torgiano Rosso Riserva got DOCG status in 1991.
