VR Península de Setúbal

Description to VR Península de Setúbal
The former Vinho regional area Terras do Sado in the central west Portugal received this new name in 2009. The area was defined in 1907 as the second quality wine region after Porto. It is named after the Península Setúbal peninsula directly adjacent to the capital Lisbon. The large area includes the peninsula, but extends another 60 kilometers south along the Atlantic coast to the mouth of the Sado. The river flows through the east of the area and, in addition to the Atlantic, exerts a great influence through cool and very humid air currents. The Mediterranean climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and rainy winters. The two DOC areas are only on the peninsula Palmela and Setúbal (or Moscatel de Setúbal and Moscatel Roxo).
The wines are aged dry, semi-sweet and also noble sweet. Well-known producers are Adega de Pegões, Caves Alianca, Fonseca, JP Vinhos (Fonseca), Quinta da Bacalhôa (Fonseca) and Quinta de Camarate (Fonseca).
